From early philosopher to concerned citizen…
I go by the pronouns she and her and try to be an ally to all of those who are oppressed by their circumstances.
Welcome!
I am a teacher, mother, and human being interested in finding creative solutions to the challenges facing modern society. I am frustrated by the resistance to change that comes from inertia – the old “It can’t be done… because that’s just not how it’s done.”
I was an elementary school teacher in Toronto for over 20 years. I have spent my career finding ways to make education more accessible and motivating for children. In 2022, I resigned from my job, disillusioned by the resistance to change, and no longer willing to be part of the problem.
My dream was to open an “unschool,” where children would follow their interests and learn authentically. Instead, we picked up and moved our family to Victoria, BC, in search of more progressive education, a more temperate climate, and a more outdoor lifestyle. I have not been disappointed.
I am finding the school system here a welcome and refreshing change from what I knew, and I am contemplating going back into the education field in some capacity.
In university, I studied psychology, researching attachment in high risk children. After having my own children, my interest in attachment was renewed, and I have spent years learning how to best meet the needs of two neurodiverse children.
In the past few years, that work led me to my own therapy, and I have spent several years climbing out of my own personal well, learning about trust, trauma, anxiety, dissociation, neurodiversity, and attachment. It has not been an easy path, but it has been a beautiful unfolding.
While taking some time off from teaching, I began working on a Master’s of Social Work, where I was introduced to social justice issues and perspectives that inspired and motivated me to pursue radical ideas for change. I did not complete the program, deciding instead to return to the classroom, where my impact will be more immediate.
I wanted a platform to think out loud, to refine and share my ideas, and to get others involved in creative problem solving. It is my hope that together we can re-imagine what the world COULD be like, if only we would let go of what it already is. I’d be honoured if you would join me.
